Varsity Gets 7th Shut-out in a Row. Defeats Candor 46-0!!

Posted Sunday, October 28, 2007 by bb

BINGHAMTON -- Tack on another shutout for the "Orange Crush" of Walton, its seventh in succession, this time by 46-0 Saturday night over a Candor squad that featured the No. 1 ground gainer in Section 4 football.

Candor logged a painful minus-49 net rushing yards in the Class D semifinal at Binghamton Alumni Stadium, with Casey Smith -- good for 1,312 yards through the first eight games -- whacked 23 yards in the negative direction.

Indeed, third-ranked Walton (9-0) is that sound, and then some.

The starting running back trio of Casey Killian, Logan Wood and Richard Fletcher carried an aggregate 29 times for 305 yards on a night the Warriors actually came up 10 points shy of their regular-season scoring average.

Next comes the title game, 10 a.m. Saturday against Deposit on the same field. It was the Lumberjacks who last soiled Walton's goal line, back on Sept. 8, when this juggernaut was in its infantile stages.

"It just means our defense is getting better each week,'' Warriors tackle Wade Hammond said of the string of defensive zeros. "It's just a challenge to us, to see if we can do it again."

Said Walton coach Jim Hoover: "They had the No. 1 rusher in Section 4. We didn't say anything to the kids (during the week) other than here are your keys and here's what you've got to do."

The streak was threatened early, when Smith returned the opening kickoff 46 yards to Walton's 39, and four offensive plays advanced the Indians to the 4. But four plays and a penalty later, Walton had possession at its 1-yard line after stopping quarterback Gino Martone short on a fourth-down sneak.

And off-and-running went Walton on a nine-play drive that lasted 4:26 and ended with Fletcher bulling in from the 1 and Killian adding a two-point run.

A second quarter that began with eight points separating the two gave way to a Walton rout, with two rushing TDs by Wood to go with a 52-yard fumble return for a score by sophomore Phil Hanley that led to a 30-0 halftime spread.

Fletcher and Hanley added rushing touchdowns in the second half, and the Warriors closed with a 401-yard rushing total.

"To stop them inside the 5 and drive the ball 99 yards in a matter of a few minutes shows that this team really has a lot of heart and a lot of guts," Hoover said of the first TD drive, which included two runs of 22 or more yards.
