Orange Crush Wins Section 4 Title!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted Sunday, November 04, 2007 by TT

BINGHAMTON -- Fullback Richard Fletcher thumped Deposit for 38 points in his three quarters of work Saturday, in leading Walton's 52-0 victory that secured Section 4's Class D football championship.

The Warriors capitalized first on a turnover and then on a botched punt return to produce 14 first-quarter points, and the outcome at Binghamton Alumni Stadium made for an eighth consecutive Walton shutout.

Not since the fourth quarter of a Week 2 tiff against Deposit has Walton permitted a point. Over those last 32 quarters of football, the tote board shows: Warriors 441, The Rest 0.

Ahead for the second-ranked Warriors (10-0) is a state quarterfinal against top-ranked Section 3 champion Onondaga (10-0). That is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. Friday back at Binghamton.

Fletcher, a 223-pound senior, rushed for 154 yards, five touchdowns and a conversion, and added a 7-yard reception from Patrick O'Brien for a score. The six-TD effort, he said, bested by two his previous varsity high.

"It definitely wasn't pre-determined," Fletcher said of his 22-carry workload. "I think Mr. Hoover just had a whim that it was working and he wanted to stay with it, so I kept getting the ball. I'm not going to complain."

However, it was no coincidence that the football found its way to No. 42 with such regularity.

"Throughout the year, our ball carriers have all been carrying eight, nine, 10 times a game," coach Jim Hoover said. "But I looked back at the second week when we beat Deposit, Fletcher carried the ball 20 times.

"We knew that what we call '22 Fullback Keep,' just a power play, we've had success with that. They did their best to stop it, they were shooting linebackers. But he runs hard. That was a big play for us."

Field position was the Warriors' ally virtually throughout, beginning with a punt early on that stymied the Lumberjacks at their half-yard line. Drew Hammond recovered a Deposit fumble at the 4 two plays after the punt, and Fletcher rushed in on first down and added the two-pointer for an 8-0 lead.

Walton would start first-half possessions three more times in Deposit territory, and missed converting all three into TDs when it was ruled that Fletcher had fumbled into the end zone on a rush from the 6-yard line.

Deposit (8-2), gainer of a single first down before halftime, was subject to third-quarter Walton possessions that began 25, 34 and 22 yards, respectively, from the goal line.

The aforementioned drives went 10 plays combined for three more Fletcher TDs.

And, yes, there was a bit of assistance from the big guys with the high jersey numbers leading to Fletcher's stat sheet stuffing.

"It's awesome. That's the best line I've ever seen," Fletcher said of center Drew Hammond, guards Chris Mead and Dominic Tomao, and tackles Wade Hammond and Brad Hodges. Average across the front, that's a hefty 240 pounds per teenager. "They give 100 percent all the time, they're big and they can move the load."

Defensively, playmakers were widespread -- as one might imagine from a unit that hasn't allowed a point since Sept. 8. Cody Reed's No. 33 jersey was conspicuous all about the field on a day two dozen Deposit plays went for either no gain or negative yardage.

Should that unreal streak of defensive zeros come to an end at some point next weekend?

"We won't put our heads down, we'll just keep coming at them," Drew Hammond said. "The shutout streak, if it ends it ends, if it doesn't, it doesn't. It's something that's awesome to hold, but if we let them score it doesn't matter just as long as we hopefully win at the end."
