Walton moves into ‘D’ semis

Staff Report

Phil Hanley and Bryant Mead each had two touchdowns as host Walton scored all of its points in the opening half of a 38-0 Section Four Football Conference Class D quarterfinal victory over Bainbridge- Guilford on Saturday.

The Warriors (8-0), who won the Class D state championship last season, extended their winning streak to 21 games. Walton coach Jim Hoover said the second half was played in a steady downpour.

“We looked real sharp the first half,” Hoover said.

“The second half just got miserable with the rain and the field. ... We had a couple drives the second half, but we weren’t able to put it in and we fumbled the ball.”

The Warriors, who outgained the Bobcats, 395 to minus-1 yards, and held B-G senior running back Dustin Ross to minus- 10 yards. Ross entered the game with 886 yards.

“We did a lot of nice things,” Hoover said. “If you hold a good running back to minus yardage, you know you’re doing something right. ... We played our normal defense and knew we had to contain him. We contained him from getting outside.

The weather didn’t help him, either. We kept him running between the tackles and when you turn people in with our defense and the way we pursue, it’s going to be tough running.”

Hanley finished with 121 yards on eight carries. Mead had 91 yards on 10 rushes and Eddie Dickson contributed 78 yards and a touchdown on six carries.

The Warriors advance to a Class D semifinal at noon Saturday at Union-Endicott’s Ty Cobb Stadium against Candor (7-1). The Indians advanced with a 22-15 victory over Spencer- VanEtten on Friday.

“They don’t do a lot of fancy things,” Hoover said of Candor.

“... They come at you and defensively they give you a lot of different looks. You have to prepare for all of them.”
