GREENE — One of the goals Greene coach Tim Paske had prior to the start of this season was for quarterback Joe Beckwith to be more of a playmaker and less of a caretaker into this season, so far so good. Beckwith tossed three long touchdown passes – two to Lane Whittaker – and also ran for a touchdown as the host Trojans rolled to a 43-16 victory over Walton in a nonleague Friday night. In a showdown of teams expected to be in the Section 4 title in their respective classes – Greene in Class C and Walton in Class D – the Trojans took command with four touchdowns in a span of just under four minutes. That surge began with Beckwith’s 13-yard touchdown run with 4:17 remaining in the second quarter, putting Greene (2-0) ahead 14-0. The score was preceded by a 27-yard reception by Whittaker on a fourth-and-5 play from the Walton 40-yard line. Walton (1-1) fumbled on the first play of its ensuing possession, with Greene recovering at the Warriors’ 32. It took one play for Greene to capitalize, as Beckwith lofted a pass down the left sideline that Whittaker made a leaping grab of near the 5, the 6-foot-1 senior stretching into the end zone as he fell down for the score that put Greene ahead 20-0 with 3:59 left. Walton answered back with a quick score on Mike Beers’ 1-yard run with 2:36, making it 20-8, but Greene struck again in the waning seconds of the half. Following an interception by Greene’s Jeremy Flohr, Beckwith threw a deep pass that Whittaker hauled in for a 43-yard touchdown catch with 13.2 seconds remaining that increased Greene’s lead to 27-8 going into halftime. The break did not slow Greene’s offense down, as Beckwith tossed yet another deep touchdown pass, this one a 63-yarder to Flohr on the first play from scrimmage in the third quarter, for a 35-8 lead. “Me and Lane and Jeremy, we’ve been playing for a few years together now,” Beckwith said. “Coming out now, I don’t even think about it, I just throw it and have them catch the ball.” “I have all the confidence in the world in Lane, he makes the plays for me.” Beckwith finished 5-for-7 for 165 yards passing, with Whittaker catching four balls for 110 yards. “We’ve been working on the passing game all week,” Greene coach Tim Paske said. “We know that Walton commits to stop the run, but with Joe coming back as a second-year starter, and some guys that can catch the ball, we have to unleash that a little bit. “It gives us another dimension and something else for teams to prepare for.” Greene also managed to pound out 223 yards on the ground – Mike Beckwith led with 89 yards on 13 carries – the nearly 400 yards of offense to the fine play of offense linemen Chris Kehoe, Trevor Flohr, Garrett Huttleston, Dan Haskell and Andy Walker. Neither team did much offensively in the early going, the lone score of the game’s opening 20 minutes coming on a 65-yard punt return by Whittaker midway through the first quarter. Walton finished with 226 yards of offense, all on the ground, with Beers accounting for 115 yards and both touchdowns.
