Warriors Defeat Deposit-Hancock
Trevor Spencer, Austin Kilmer and Mike Beers combined for 338 rushing yards and five touchdowns in the Warriors’ Division VII victory Saturday.
The Warriors scored 24 points in the first quarter, with Beers scoring on a 3-yard run, Kilmer going in on a 50-yard dash, and Spencer running in on a 27-yarder. Those three had two-point conversion runs in the quarter as well.
Spencer (129 rushing yards) and Beers (90) finished with two touchdowns apiece, and sophomore quarterback Trevor Zandt contributed a 24-yard scoring pass to Brandon Scofield.
“We needed a win like this early in the season,” Hoover said. “The schedule didn’t help with getting confidence for our young people.”
Hoover added that if Walton does make the playoffs, it will open at top-seeded Tioga (6-1), a rematch of last year’s Section Four Class D final that the Tigers won, 19-18.
“They’re a lot better football team than last year and they’re young,” Hoover said. “They have three seniors starting on offense and three seniors starting on defense. They’re young and they’re very, very good.
“We have to play four quarters, which we haven’t done all year,” he continued. “It’s tough with (senior quarterback) Dalton (Kaminsky) out for the year. To lose a quarterback who’s started for three years is hard. We’re experimenting with two 10th-grade quarterbacks (Zandt and Matt Sinistore), but we want a shot at playing Tioga. They’re one of the best teams in the state. We’d like to see what we can do. Last week, we started five 10th-graders on defense, so this would do us good.”
Kaminsky broke his left arm in Walton’s 28-18 win over Delhi two weeks ago.
Walton 46, Deposit 6:
Host Walton scored six times and collected 429 rushing yards, with Trevor Spencer gaining 129 yards and Austin Kilmer 119.
Mike Beers had the first and last touchdowns for Walton, scoring on a 3-yard run in the first quarter and a 14-yard run in the third.
Trevor Spencer also scored twice for the Warriors on a 27-yard run in the first quarter and a 25-yard rush in the second. Austin Kilmer and Brandon Scofield scored Walton’s other touchdowns.
Deposit broke through in the second quarter on a 38-yard pass from Austin Decker to Matt Mills.
